  4. I think the feelings James had were different for different reasons. One feeling he had was happy that they won and didnt have to be sold into salvery. Also he was sad because all the people he killed. " The missing crew was replaced."

  7. I think that some of the feelings that James forten had or might of had is sadness, excitment, and lack of spirit. I think he had lack of spirt and sadness was because they still were out numbered. I think he was excited because that he had taken their ship and was really happy." The crowd on the dock cheered wildly as they recongnized the American flag on the Royal Louis."

  8. James was sad, shocked, and glad that the british ship surredered to the active because some of his freinds were hurt, woned, and some killed. He was shocked because one wrong move and they all could have died agenst the british but luckly he lived. James was also glad because he lived and he could continue his life as a sailor. "James had mixed feelings as he saw many of his comrades wounded, some mortaly."

  9. James had mixed feelings when they captured the ship Active because he was happy that they won. But he was sad because a lot of his friends got hurt in the process. And some of them got terribily hurt or died too. =( "On board the victorious ship James Forten had mixed feelings as he saw so many of his comrades wounded, some mortally."

I think james had mixed feelings because had won but most of his shipmates were hurt."salors all around forten were falling, some dying even as others called for more power."I think he was scared that soon he would be hit or that his ship would sink.he probably aslo had mixed feelings after because he was thinking that he could have been hit to.

  13. James Forten has mixed feelings about his victory over british because he was sad that alot of the crew died but he was still happy.
I think James felt both ways because you know when someone dies it is always sad exspecially when you are fighting for your country. But I also think he was happy because they just won a war. "after what must have seemed forever with the two ships tacking about each other like angry cats, the Active lowered it's flag, It had surrendered!"

  14. The reason that James Forten had "mixed feelings" was because maybe it was a trap. Like, when they got aboard the "Active", they could be sold into slavery, which is exactly what happend. But by good forture, he was getting on the "Jermey" instead of getting sold into slavery. I belive that he should have mixed feelings about it. Wouldn't you? In the book, it says,"Decatur brought his ship into Philidelphia, his guns still trained on the limping "Active"." He may have been sad because his crew got wounded, but glad because he won.

  15. James was sad because a lot of men where killed. He was also happy because he and his crew won the battle. All and all he was sad and happy. "In the summer of 1781, James Forten signed onto the privateer Royal Louis , commanded by Stephen Decatur, Sr.

  19. I think James felt sad because some of his crew members had died and some were terribly injured. I am geussing he also was scared to think of the next battle he would have and what would happen if they lost and got sent to slavery. I think he was happy that Philadelphia won the battle and didn't get hurt or killed. Here is a quote to go with my answer, "Once the fear of the battle had subided and the wounded were taken off, it was easy to think about the dangerous encounter in terms of adventure. And they had won."

  20. James first felt worride that he and his ship mates would lose the battle. He knew that they would sell him for slavery if they surrender.Or he could get killed if the ship was shot down.when the Ative surrendered,he felt relive but sad that many men where wounded and killed.

  21. James Forton was happy because he got some of the money. He also felt sad because the crew of the Active lost their ship. For example it said" Sailers all about Forten were fallin, some dying." He was sad his crew mates had died.

  23. I think James felt scared beacause it was his job to go bellow deck and get gun powder."Forten's job was to carry the powder from bellow to the guns."At any time the gun powder could blow up and kill him and his crew.James was verybrave to get that job on the ship

  24. James felt happy because he mad a British boat surrender and he helped stop the from attacking. He probally also felt sad too because he killed people. And the british could of been faking and sink the boat. " The Royal Louis's guns were loaded with gunpowder that was tamped down by an assisant gunner."

  25. I think James Forten was releived that they had overtaken the enemy ship but was frightened for some of his other crew members who had been killed or terribly injured. He considered himself lucky enough to not be gravely injured or killed. He was very sad that his crew members who worked so hard died though. It was like paying a price for something they didn't buy. I can tell he is sorry by this quote,"James Forten had mixed feelings as he saw so many of his comrades wounded, some mortally."

  29. james forten ahd mixed feelings like he waz happy and sad at the same time. the reason i think he is happy is beacause once they won they felt like they gave it all they could to win. the other reason i think he was sad because he saw many comareds wounded, some he saw mortaly. It also gave him ideas of what had happened to his father."After what had seemed forever wiyh the 2 ships tacking about each other like angry cats the Active lowered its flag,Ithad finally surrendered!"

  30. I think James Forten was happy and sad. I think he was happy because he won the victory.I also think he was sad because some people were getting shot on the ship he was on.He was also sad because some people died.Others were screaming for more power and james was probably feeling really bad for them."Sailors all about Forten were falling, some dying even as others cried for more power."
